He also becomes a heroin addict due to the recurring back pain. Paco crashes into another car at the El Pino tree and they are both arrested.įrom here, the trio's paths diverges: Miklo is sent to San Quentin State Prison for murder, Paco volunteers for military service in the United States Marine Corps as an alternative choice to prison, and Cruz continues his passion for art. Miklo is able to shoot and kill Spider, but has to be rushed to the hospital by Paco while being chased by police. However, things go wrong when Miklo ends up getting shot by their rival gang's leader, "Spider". When Vatos Locos learn of the attack, they perform a well-planned counterattack. Upon moving back home from Las Vegas, Nevada, Miklo goes to stay with his two cousins Paco and Cruz. It’s such an interesting little detail about Big Al that I’ve never noticed until just recently and Blood In Blood Out is one of my favorite movies of all time.Miklo is a man of Mexican and White American ethnicity who grew up in El Pico Aliso barrio in East Los Angeles. He’s just trying extra hard to fit in with the white prison gangs. It would explain why he is so racist to all of the minorities in prison. He might have shunned his identity from where he grew up because he was light skinned and had blonde hair and figured it was easier to live as a white Texan rather than a light skinned Mexican. Maybe Big Al was actually Mexican instead of from Texas. In Big Al’s final moment, in sudden pain he reverts back to his first language and yells “WHY?” at Miklo. It is generally believed that a bilingual person will instinctively revert back to their native language in times of extreme emotion and sudden trauma. Big Al yells out “PORQUE?” when Miklo lands the killing blow. This is where my theory comes from and I never noticed it until I read a few YouTube comments on the scene. So Miklo pretends to shack up with him and play hard to get, finally getting Big Al alone one day and stabbing him in the heart. When Miklo is sent to prison he automatically clicks with the Latino gangs and is tasked with assassinating Big Al for a rash of things like selling all the pork chops to the AV before the black and Latino prisoners can get any, fixing his odds on the games he takes bets on, and raping. Eventually Miklo is arrested by the police and sent to prison for murder and the rest of the film chronicles his rise through the ranks of the Mexican prison gangs. Big Al’s first language wasn’t even English, it was Spanish.īIBO follows the life of Miklo, a light skinned, blonde hair Chicano striving to fit in with his Latino family and the East LA gang culture in the 1970s. Big Al is actually half Chicano, like the main protagonist Miklo. My theory is that the AV know that he is not 100% white and therefore forbid him from joining their ranks. But some reason either he doesn’t want to click with them completely or they won’t let him in to their gang for unknown reasons. It’s clear by his tattoos and appearance that he is somehow allied with the Arian Vanguard, a neo nazi gang. A racist bookie that operates within San Quentin and constantly berates and harasses the other prisoners for being black or Latino. In Blood In Blood Out during the prison scenes we are introduced to a minor villain named Big Al.
